Use Osmo for UV protection for wood
It is widely known that prolonged exposure to ultraviolet (UV) light can be harmful to us. Before we head off on our summer holidays or pack a bag for a trip to the beach, we make sure to have an appropriate form of sun cream for protection. The light from the sun is powerful and while there are benefits to ‘soaking up the rays’, there are also drawbacks – and not just for us.
Exterior wood products and features such as furniture, decking and cladding, also need UV protection if we want to preserve and maintain their performance and looks over the long term. When left untreated and exposed to sunlight, the original colour of external vertical and horizontal wooden surfaces fades into a grey/silver sheen. For some, this effect is desirable but others might wish to retain the natural hue and highlights in the wood.
Osmo has a wide range of wood finishes that offer UV protection for all types of exterior wood projects. Our range is built on decades of experience and there’s one rule we always ask customers to follow where UV protection is concerned: the darker the colour you choose, the greater the UV protection offered. If you follow that rule, you can’t go wrong. That said, compared to untreated wood, our Osmo UV-Protection Oil Clear slows the UV ageing process by a factor of 12 on vertical wooden surfaces such as furniture and cladding! To really enhance the UV protection however, our wide range of tinted and opaque coloured oils really deliver.
Available in natural colours – such as oak, larch and cedar, to name a few – oil tints intensify the natural colour of timber through the use of natural pigments. In addition, the transparent nature of the tinted oils allows the wood grain to remain visible after application. Our Country Colour range is another natural wood oil by Osmo and provides excellent UV resistance.
Osmo oils can also be used on horizontal surfaces, such as decking, garden furniture and other wooden structures, to provide them with resistance to the weathering process.
Unlike vertical wooden structures, it’s recommended that Osmo Decking Oils (11 tints) or Natural Oil Woodstain (19 tints) be used rather than the Clear, Osmo UV-Protection Oil.
The Osmo UV oils range offers great protection and helps preserve and protect your investment in external wooden furniture, cladding and decking for years to come.
