Reclaimed Bathroom Furniture
Many people dream of turning their hobby into a business. Unfortunately for many, it often remains just a dream – something that never quite becomes a reality. For husband and wife team Lisa and Chris Saunders of Blue Door Designs, the dream did materialise. With plenty of time on their hands during the pandemic, and lockdown giving them the opportunity to focus, they were able to dedicate their efforts to growing their hobby – designing and building bathroom furniture – into a fledgling, and subsequently thriving business.
Specialising in using reclaimed timber as well new wood, the couple have crafted some strikingly unique vanity units on a commission basis. Their growing customer base extends from their home in Doncaster in South Yorkshire, to West Yorkshire and across the Pennines over into Manchester.
“Following redundancy, we were able to put all our energies into Blue Door Designs. The fact that we no longer had day jobs provided the impetus we needed to get the business properly off the ground and start doing something we loved. Our passion is wood, particularly reclaimed. We’ve found that using the best finishing product not only preserves the wood but also brings out the beauty and history that’s often etched into its surface. In essence, a well-applied finish lets the wood live again in new, often unexpected ways.”
Lisa, Blue Door Designs.
For their latest bespoke piece, the couple used Osmo Polyx®-Oil in its Raw finish variety. Applied with a brush, the finish is almost transparent with a very light, white pigment running through it that particularly suited to this reclaimed wood unit. While appreciating the transparent finish that allows the natural wood to shine through, Lisa and Chris also appreciate the sustainable manufacturing process of Osmo products. These green credentials fit comfortably with Blue Door Design’s sustainable ethos.
“Discovering Osmo finishes and using them on a wide variety of our projects, has really helped take our work to the next level. Alongside the superior results we can achieve with Osmo, we also enjoy using products that are sustainable and minimise our carbon footprint. And best of all, our customers love the finished result.”
