Scottish House Renovation
In 2017, Steph and James Lynch purchased a property in Prestwick, South Ayrshire, and began a full house renovation. This project included them stripping the house back to the bare brick and starting all over again by replacing all the plumbing, boiler and radiators, rewiring the house, installing a wood burning stove and fitting new solid oak parquet flooring.
The couple added a wrap around extension to create an open plan living, kitchen and dining area, which includes Bifolding doors, four pitched Velux windows and a large pane of glass. The side extensions includes a utility room, extended hallway and downstairs toilet /shower room.
The exterior also went through a significant transformation, which includes new windows, a driveway and full garden renovation, featuring planters made from around 20 sleepers.
With a lot of wood featuring both internally and externally, the couple wanted to find a high-quality finish that would protect and enhance the wooden surface.
Osmo Inside
“We fitted solid oak parquet flooring in the living room and kitchen and the connecting hallway,” commented James. “With these rooms being two of the most used spaces in the house, we required a product that was very waterproof as well as hard wearing. I also wanted a product that would not overly change the appearance of the original, unfinished parquet flooring, and for this reason, we selected Polyx®-Oil 3062 Clear, Matt from Osmo UK.”
James Lynch, homeowner.
The surface was given a very light sand with a hand sander, before two coats of the finish were applied.
Due to the size of area inside, it took a couple of hours to apply the finish and it was left overnight to dry.
Having consultation with Osmo UK through Instagram, James realised that this product could also be used on the solid wood kitchen worktops, so he went ahead and applied two coats of the Polyx®-Oil finish to this surface.
Offering all the professional features of a traditional oil-based finish, Polyx®-Oil allows the natural texture of the wood to still be apparent. Polyx®-Oil also offers a high level of wear protection that can occasionally be topped up without sanding when required.
The finished surface is also spot repairable. Polyx®-Oil’s natural components penetrate deeply into the wood to create a micro-porous finish. This allows the wood to breathe naturally. After treatment, the wood is nourished from within and retains its elasticity.
It becomes water repellent, stain resistant and more hard-wearing, because it meets the wood’s natural demands and does not crack, flake, peel or blister.
Osmo Outside
“When we turned our attention to the garden, we purchased new sleepers to create planters around the outside space. We experience all types of weather up in Scotland, so we knew that we would need a finish that will prevent the sleepers fading from sunlight or getting damaged from the rain or snow. We worked with Core Landscapes for the garden renovations. They told us that they had an amazing product that would work wonders on the sleepers – Osmo UV-Protection-Oil 420 Clear. We were so pleased with the results of the Osmo finish internally, so we knew that this was the right choice for the sleepers.”
James Lynch, homeowner.
James wanted to keep the rustic look of the sleepers, so applied two coats of UV-Protection-Oil without sanding the surface. It took around 30 minutes to apply the finish and the surface was dry within a few hours. James commented that the finish is very simple to use and that he loves how hard-wearing and waterproof it is.
Osmo UV-Protection-Oil is a quality finish that protects, maintains, and restores exterior wood. It has been specially designed to protect the wood, leaving it looking in top condition. Based on natural oil, it does not crack, flake, peel or blister. It delays the greying effect that sun exposure can cause on exterior wood and maintains the wood’s natural aesthetics.
End Result
“We are so happy with the end result both internally and externally. We laid the parquet flooring a couple of years ago and since then, have mopped the floor once a week with a damp mop and it still looks good as new. The sleepers look fantastic. I love it when it rains as you can actually see the rain droplets run off the sleeper. We will definitely be using Osmo UK products again in the future. We are very impressed with the quality of the product. It’s a product that I trust, and we love the results.”
