Wooden Shephard Hut Finished with Osmo
Highfields Holidays has been offering bed & breakfast accommodation in the village of Coates, Cambridgeshire since 2018. In 2022, Pete and Anita Boardman who run the B&B decided to expand their offering to include self-catering accommodation, and a bespoke wooden shepherd hut.
The structure of the hut came as a flat pack and was designed to a very high quality. The inside was also bespoke, with all fixtures and fittings designed specifically for the hut. Features include a kitchen, en-suite bathroom and outside area with seating area overlooking the private fishing lake.
Protecting Wood
While the hut looked stunning once built, the owners were aware that they would need to protect the wood to ensure it stayed that way.
Pete, owner of Highfield Holiday’s says “As there was so much involved in building the hut and we made everything to a bespoke high-quality standard, we did not want to compromise on the quality of the wood protection. We were recommended Osmo by the company that we purchased the hut from, so we did lots of research and could see straight away the quality of the Osmo oils.”.

To ensure the wooden shepherd hut was completely water repellent and protected from UV rays, the pair applied Osmo UV-Protection Oil 420 Clear Satin with a brush to ensure even coverage, particularly in the grooves of the structure.
As well as being highly water and dirt resistant, Osmo UV-Protection Oil features active ingredients that will protect the hut against mould, algae and fungal attack.
“We are SO pleased with the result,” says Anita. “The hut has such a warm glow to it and yet still has that natural wood look. When the sun is out it looks like it is lit up in our field. The good thing about the oils is that they do not go flaky over time so it will be just as easy to recoat when the time comes. We have also used Osmo Polyx-Oil in the bathroom of the hut as it will protect from the humidity and steam from the shower. All our guests comment about the colour when they see it.”
“We have already used Osmo oil on other projects at our bed & breakfast and will continue to use and recommend it,”

Osmo oils are made with natural plant oils and waxes, which nourishes the wood whilst protecting it at the same time. The oils and waxes do not create a film, and instead allow the wood to breath – leaving you with healthy and happy wood!
