While MI is used as a preservative, Isothiazolinone is an antifouling agent used to control bacteria, fungi, and algae in various applications, including wood preservation and paints.
Despite their effectiveness as biocides, MI and Isothiazolinone are strong sensitisers which can sometimes produce skin irritations and allergies, plus they may pose ecotoxicological hazards.
