Treating Softwoods for the prevention of mould, fungi and algae
Wood provides a great building material for external applications, such as fencing, decking and cladding. However, it is important to know what type of wood you are using as some are more prone to things like mould, fungi and algae. This could have an impact on your choice of protective finish if a longer lasting structure is desired.
Generally categorised in two ways, timber is referred to as either hardwood or softwood. Hardwoods tend to be from broad-leafed, deciduous trees that include species like Beech and Oak. Hardwoods are likely to be slower growing and are usually denser than softwoods. As a result of their condensed and more complex structure, hardwoods generally offer a superior level of strength and durability.
Softwoods derive from conifers and are considered more sustainable as they are faster growing and easier to replace. Softwoods are usually less dense compared to hardwoods and generally absorb more moisture. Excess moisture promotes mould, fungi and algae, which if not treated, will be damaging to the timber’s structure. Softwoods will benefit from an Osmo pre-treatment product that helps prevent the unwanted growth of microorganisms. The Osmo finish also shares the sustainability aspect of softwood through inherent natural ingredients used.
Osmo WR Base Coat 4001 is an exterior only pre-treatment product ideal for softwoods. The wood material becomes less prone to moisture and is further protected by active biocidal ingredients that resist moulds, algae and fungus. The product also helps prevent blue stain and rot attack and reduces swelling and shrinkage.
Following treatment with Osmo WR Base Coat, you can then think about adding a highly dirt and water repellent Osmo finish. Popular options include Osmo UV-Protection-Oil 420 Clear, which brings beauty and lustre to the wood whilst performing very well on vertical surfaces. Like other Osmo finishes, UV-Protection-Oil 420 Clear is furnished with added biocide ingredients that help protect the film coating from mould, algae and fungus.
By using Osmo finishes containing many sustainable raw materials, you can create a stunning finish that prolongs the life of the wood whilst helping the environment.
