New England Style in Country Colour
Tracey Gill is the owner of an idyllic rural property, set in 3 peaceful acres near Uckfield in Sussex.
The exterior of her house is inspired by New England style weatherboard homes, with scandi interiors, packed with rustic, ‘shabby chic’ decor and vintage details.
Tracey offers daily inspiration for recycling, repurposing and revamping on her popular Instagram account @ruralrefurb and her property is in regular demand for photo shoots due to its stunning design.
For Tracey’s latest project, she turned to Osmo for help with her transformation of the cottage, a 500 sqft one bedroom annexe that had originally been used as storage and a site office, during the main house extension and refurb.
The cottage was a flat roofed, outdated building with rotting, badly applied cladding but despite this, it was solid and watertight. Tracey’s vision was to make it visually appealing by adding a faux pitched roof, a veranda, and an outdoor kitchen and wrapping in fresh timber. The cottage would then mirror the beautiful, New England style aesthetic of the main house.

For the new cladding, Tracey used Douglas Fir freshly cut to her bespoke measurements from a local sawmill. To start, Tracy used Osmo WR Base Coat 4001 Clear, applied with a brush to provide an extremely water repellent base layer, which is resistant to blue stain, rot and insect attacks.
She then used Osmo Country Colour 2101 in white applied with a brush, to blend with the fresh white exterior of the main house. Tracey chose this particular Osmo finish as it is exceptionally weather and UV resistant, repels dirt and helps to reduce wood swelling and shrinkage.
Osmo Country Colour 2101 delivers a microporous, breathable finish which does not crack, peel, blister or flake, making it ideal for the changeable English weather conditions.
The finished cottage looks exceptional. Tracey has created a tranquil rural space, complete with sweeping veranda, fire pit seating and BBQ area, making it the perfect spot for outdoor living.

“I chose Osmo because it offers superior protection, great coverage and can be reapplied without sanding, which is incredibly important to me, as I do all the decorating at our property! The durability beats a paint finish and I’m confident it will continue to look great for years to come. I’ve used Osmo previously and have always been delighted with the high-quality result.”
