Wood tends to fade in full sun. This leads to a natural silver and grey appearance that you may currently have, or be familiar with seeing.
Osmo UV-Protection Oil will help delay this natural silvering and greying process in the wood however, natural fading is still possible – especially in very exposed locations.
If the natural colour of the wood has faded beneath the Clear UV-Protection Oil, then applying more of the clear oil will not refresh the rich wood colour once more.
This is only possible by sanding back the wood, weathering the surface (depending on wood species), then once again applying the Clear UV-Protection Oil accordingly.
Increase Protection with Colour
Choosing an exterior finish with colour can help to retain some colour in the wood surface for longer. Having colour also helps offer UV protection; generally, the darker the colour chosen, the higher the UV protection offered.
To use one of the Osmo colour products will usually require the surface to be sanded back to bare wood, weathered (depending on wood species), then applying two thin coats of the chosen exterior colour finish.
We recommend using one of two products to achieve this colourful desire protection. Osmo UV-Protection Oil Tints or Natural Oil Woodstain both offer colour and a higher UV protection, while allowing the wood grain to remain visible throughout the finish.
We always recommend carrying out discrete trials first.
