Refresh old and grey exterior wood around the home with Osmo exterior protection products and enjoy the beauty and vibrancy of this natural material once more.
Wood Exposure to the Weather
When exterior wood has prolonged exposure to the weather, it will begin to look dull, tired, and less vibrant.
Over time, strong UV rays from the sun help to break down protective lignin in the wood, and with added moisture, the wood’s fibres become exposed and more vulnerable to change. Eventually exposed wood develops a natural grey patina.
Refresh with Wood Reviver Power Gel
Osmo has an effective solution called Wood Reviver Power Gel to help remove the grey patina and refresh the rich natural colour in the wood. It’s an easy to apply, non-drip product that is free of solvents, formaldehyde, chlorine compounds and amines.
The gel penetrates the wood deeply and removes the grey patina. Through subsequent re-oiling, the fresh warm wood colour is restored. To use, first wet the surface then apply the Wood Reviver Power Gel with a brush in the direction of the grain on to the greyed areas.
Wait for about 20 minutes for the gel to penetrate the surface. Depending on the extent of the greying, you may need to use a stiff scrubbing brush to remove the grey wood fibres. If necessary, apply a further top up coat to fully restore the natural colour. Once cleaned, rinse with plenty of water.
After approximately 48 hours drying in good weather conditions, the wood will now be looking fresh and the natural character of the wood will be retained.
Protect Exterior Wooden Surfaces with Osmo
The newly refreshed wood will benefit from a treatment to give it the necessary protection. Osmo wood finishes are based on vegetable oils that penetrate the wood to nourish it and provide the best natural protection.
Once dry, the wood surface will become durable and water resistant, yet breathable. Rainwater will be unable to penetrate the new protection coating and will bead on the surface, while excess moisture within the wooden structure can still escape through the coating to ensure warping is reduced.
Application of Osmo Wood Oil
Once you’ve decided on a colour tone, we would recommend trialling a sample onto a small section of your wood, so that you are happy with the appearance.
For this project, we decided to use Osmo Natural Oil Woodstain in Teak 708. Always stir the product well before application.
Here we are using the Osmo Roller and Brush Set. The brush has high quality natural bristles, the tray has disposable plastic inserts, and the roller has microfibre fabric heads for easy application. Apply thinly, along the direction of the grain and spread well.
Avoid any roller or brush marks by applying evenly and thoroughly. The small brush is ideal for any grooves within the structure. Allow for good ventilation and leave to dry for at least 12 hours.
For the final coat use the same application method as before. This will cover any possible patches to provide the wood with an even smoother naturally protected surface.
Once dry, the surface offers an excellent level of protection and over time, the wooden surface can be topped up again with Osmo, without needing to sand back to bare wood.
